Scheduler

Introduction

The Scheduler allows you to instruct GhostSurf to run special tasks (like updating your anonymous hubs, or clearing spyware from your computer) at specific intervals. You can tell GhostSurf to run them only runs them when your computer is idle.

Tasks

There are three types of tasks you can run:
  • Update anonymous hubs.
  • Run GhostWipe.
  • Run SpySweep.
By default, GhostSurf creates an automatic "update anonymous hubs" task when it is first installed. We recommend you let the scheduler update your hubs fairly frequently (each time you start GhostSurf, or each day). This will ensure that your hubs list is always up-to-date and you always get the best performance from your anonymous Internet connection.

Updating anonymous hubs can include re-downloading them from the Internet; speed-testing them; removing hubs that are found to be broken; and selecting the fastest ones. You can choose how much of this you'd like to do; maybe you only want to speed-test the ones you have, and select the fastest ones.

When the Scheduler runs GhostWipe, it uses the same parameters that you used last time you ran GhostWipe. You can set SpySweep's parameters, however; you can instruct it to scan memory, your registry and/or your hard drive.

Actions

If you right-click a scheduled task, a menu will appear; from this you can edit or delete the task, view its last results or run it now. You can also stop a task that is running. When a task is run it saves information about what happened; the results window, shown below, lets you view and save these results to a file if you wish. Double-clicking a task will allow you to edit it. The "Delete..." and "Edit..." buttons also allow you to delete or edit the selected task.

You can also see what the task is doing in the Status box, shown in the Scheduler window. When a task completes, its results are shown there as well.

Adding a new task

When you click "Add a new task...", the New Task Wizard will appear. It is shown below. The first step is choosing what type of task you'd like to create: it can update your hubs, run GhostWipe or SpySweep.

If you choose "Manage hubs," you'll see the below page appear. You can select whichever actions you'd like the task to perform; they will be run in the appropriate temporal order.

Next, you'll be asked to specify when you'd like the task to run. If you select the "Only when I'm away" button, your task will not run while you're using your computer. This is useful for tasks that will slow your computer down, like GhostWipe.

Finally, you must specify a name and enter a description for your task. You can choose whatever name and description you like.

Alternatively, if you choose to run SpySweep, you'll see the below page appear after the first page. It lets you select on what parts of your computer SpySweep will be run.
